But from the dog's perspective, these behaviours may not be problematic at all. They are often a solution to a problem the dog is experiencing, and our task is to help them find another solution, or where possible, remove the underlying problem altogether.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen dealing with unwanted behaviour, trainers and behaviour consultants will often focus on the immediate context in which the behaviour occurs, looking at the ABCs of Antecedent, Behaviour and Consequence. During this seminar, Karolina will explore the value of taking a wider approach using MEF: Mood, Emotion and Function.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe first part of this approach involves stepping back and considering the dog's underlying mood state. Mood influences perception, decision making and behaviour, and by addressing factors that affect mood, such as environmental enrichment and everyday experiences, we may find that some challenging behaviours reduce without needing to address them directly.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNext, Karolina will explore the dog's emotional response to particular triggers and how we can help change that response. Through different types of exposure techniques, we will consider how changing the way a dog feels about a situation can also change the behaviour we see.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFinally, if the behaviour persists, we look more closely at its function within the immediate context. This is where the ABCs come into play. Karolina will give examples of how approaches including antecedent arrangements, non contingent reinforcement, differential reinforcement procedures (DRA, DRI and DRO), the Matching Law and Premack Principle can be used when addressing unwanted behaviour.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDrawing on ethology, affective science and behaviour analysis, this seminar brings together different scientific perspectives to explore challenging behaviour.
